Dozens of homes have been destroyed as a wind-driven brush fire roared through the hills Thursday in the Southern California coastal town of Montecito.
According to a fire department spokesperson, a quarter of the community's 10,000 people had been evacuated as of Thursday evening.
The fire began shortly before 6 p.m. and quickly moved through more than 300 acres in the foothills five miles south of Santa Barbara.
Fire officials ordered mandatory evacuations in the following areas:
*North of 192 between Hot Springs Road and Cheltenham
*All of Sycamore Canyon
*North of 192 between Sycamore Canyon and Gibraltar Road
*Sycamore Canyon at Eucalyptus Hill, South to Salinas to 5 points
